How To Get Rid Of Dark Under Eyes: STELLA skincare

28/04/2023

Dark circles can plague even the most well-rested, making eyes instantly feel puffy and in need of anti-aging treatments. But before you frantically google the latest bizarre night time skincare routines and search Tiktok for dark circle tutorials, stop right there! We’re here to explain the causes and reveal the simple, effective solutions to this beauty woe. You’ll be back to your bright-eyed best in no time.

What are dark circles and why do we get them?

The appearance of dark circles can be caused by a number of factors and whilst much focus is put onto sleep – or lack of it – this is just one of the causes.

Natural aging – as we age, the skin around our eyes becomes thinner due to a decrease in collagen production. This makes capillaries and veins more prominent under the skin, causing it to appear darker. As we get older, fat cells tend to shift around the eyes too, increasing the look of shadows.

Lack of sleep – tired puffy eyes caused by dreaded lack of sleep can create a prominent shadow under the eye, resulting in the appearance of dark circles.

Changes in diet – often an increase in exercise or a change in diet can result in loss of fat cells in the face and around the eyes. This can result in skin appearing thinner around the eyes, and veins and capillaries making the skin seems darker.

Genetics – one of the causes of dark circles in simply your genetics. It can be due to bone structure causing more of a shadow to be cast onto the lower part of the eyes or simple something that runs in the family.

Sun exposure – the skin around your eyes is naturally thin and thus sensitive to sun damage. UV radiation can break down collagen, whilst over exposure to the sun’s rays can also increase melanin, resulting in hyperpigmentation.

What can help to reduce dark circles?

It’s important to remember that usually the cause of dark circles isn’t the change in the colour of the skin itself (apart from when it is caused by hyperpigmentation), more often it is caused by shadows or thinning of skin making what’s beneath it more prominent. .

When tackling the issue, strengthening the skin and protecting it from external damage is a great place to start. Incorporating certain ingredients into your skincare routine can support your quest to rid the appearance of dark circles once and for all. Dulse Algae extract, which is a key ingredient in our award-winning Alter-Care Serum, contains skin protecting minerals including potassium, magnesium, and phosphorus. It's also naturally rich in polysaccharides, which support Alter-Care Serum to reduce the appearance of dark circles by 50% and restore an even skin tone.

Keeping the skin’s barrier function well protected will also ensure the delicate skin stays well hydrated too. The more hydrated, radiant and even your skin, the less apparent shadows will be. Our Alter-Care Serum is gentle enough to be used under the eyes and contains a wealth of hydrating, radiance-boosting ingredients including hyaluronic acid, marine spring water and olive squalane.

What else can you do to minimise them?

To reduce puffiness around the eyes, STELLA skincare expert facialist (and go-to for the very best facial massage), Hadda Akrim, advises Massaging away puffiness with Alter-Care Serum. “Starting at the lower part of the face, work the serum down to the neck in gentle strokes”, explains Hadda. "Next, massage in a slow, pumping movement over the orbital bone, below the eyes towards the temples, then down to the underneath of the chin to stimulate the lymph nodes”.

You can also look to what you eat to help support your skin’s health. Foods with a high water content, such as watermelon and cucumber help to hydrate skin, including the delicate under-eye area. Watermelon also contain Lycopene, which helps protect blood vessels and increase circulation.

Boost your diet with plenty of vitamin E from nuts, seeds and leafy veg such as spinach. Vitamin E is essential for long-term eye and skin health, so a must for any healthy diet.
