Stella McCartney speaks of Scotland like a loved one speaks about someone they know inside and out – and it’s hard to not be swept away with her.

“It’s not beautiful or manicured, it’s wild. It’s aggressive and has a rawness that is incredibly real” she professes. While these are personality traits that some might bristle at, for Stella who had her first taste and breath of the Scottish air when she was a small child, her feelings for Scotland are an enduring love affair.

Stella and her globally recognised-family relied on their farm in Scotland’s Kintyre peninsular as an antidote to their otherwise racing pace of life. She describes it as, “a chosen isolation where they could live in harmony.” It was a transformative place of peace and contrast to London; a sanctuary where her father, Paul McCartney, could write and her mother was able to get closer to her own passions.

Ahead of her time, photographer Linda McCartney was a trailblazer in vegetarian and veganism, and in highlighting the unjust and unnecessary animal cruelty that existed in fashion, beauty and beyond. These are passions that remain at the heart of everything created by Stella McCartney’s empire today. STELLA skincare is the newest and perhaps purest incarnation of these beliefs.

“To me, Scotland feels like the cleanest place in the world”, she explains. “The cleanest air, the cleanest water… Even now when I go to the mountains to go skiing, I don’t get the same associations of absolute purity as I did, growing up on the west coast of Scotland. The sea air circulating through the pine trees – indigenous or no; falling off my horse when riding bareback into the bracken, that crack and the scratch – those are priceless moments in my memory bank.
And it’s all there in the products. Our ingredients aren’t a million miles from the kinds of botanicals that would crunch underfoot on a windy walk in the sea air when I was a girl.”

Stella remembers being self-sufficient as a family, “I remember sneaking down into the tiny little garden where we were growing organic vegetables, eating all of the little sugar snap peas and my mum being furious because there were so very few that could survive in that climate. A couple of strawberries, tons and tons of root vegetables, beetroot and potatoes, carrots, and I think it was just the richness of everything there,” she says.

This pure, untouched spirit of Scotland inspired the STELLA skincare line from its early developmental stages.

“Everything feels isolated and pure, untouched by the human hand, it feels like a secret, and I think that’s partly why I wanted to bring it to others.
I think part of my enjoyment in being there came from within as well… I think beauty is from within. It’s more than skin deep. I believe very much that what you are inside is what you are on the outside.”
