How much do you know about Peatland? The chances are very little. Not often spoken about these incredibly critical areas are in fact the largest carbon store on earth – twice that of our global forests.

A vital ecosystem, they naturally help to fight the climate crisis. However, in Scotland – a place that brought much inspiration to Stella McCartney in the creation of STELLA skincare – although Peatlands cover a huge 23% of the country’s land mass, almost 80% of it is in a state of degradation. STELLA is committed to changing this.

To coincide with the launch of her new skincare range, Stella has chosen to support the conservation NGO, ‘Wetlands International’, committing to donating 1% of the net sales of STELLA skincare.

“I have always been in love with the Scottish peatlands. They preserve biodiversity, improve overall water quality and prevent flooding – but now, so much of it is degraded,” explains Stella. “I’m proud to partner with Wetlands International to support what they are doing locally to reverse damage.”

What do Wetlands international do?

Wetlands International works globally to create a planet where wetlands are treasured, to successfully educate that a world without wetlands is a world without water. Their mission is to amplify wetlands environmental, economic and social effects – from preventing floods and improving water sharing and access to clean water, to bolstering employment and livelihoods in local communities, which allows them to thrive and exist for generations to come.

How will STELLA skincare partner with them?

Recently, it was announced that 50 million hectares of peatland needs to be restored by 2050 to meet the Paris Agreement, the legally-bound global treaty which pledges to keep global warming below 1.5°C, compared to industrial levels*.This long-term partnership between STELLA and Wetlands International will support on-going regeneration projects and restoration efforts locally, whilst highlighting that more needs to be done globally, to preserve and maintain these precious biodiversity-rich, carbon-storing landscapes, now and in the future.

What can I do to help further?

Although we have focused on Scotland’s peatlands, these precious ecosystems exist across the globe – from Kenya to the Artic – and you can make a difference to their preservation. Joining a local conservation group to help with restoration and monitoring of wetland spaces close to you will allow you to witness real change over time that you have been a part of, from an increase in bird life to improvement in water quality.
